Smishing Scams on the Rise
Cyber-attacks are not going anywhere and unfortunately there is one every 39 seconds. A person is 6 to 10 times more likely to fall for a smishing or SMS phishing scam over an email phishing message. Smishing scams are on the rise and have become a super popular type of scam that cybercriminals are using.
Like email phishing, a person can download malware to their device through a smishing scam. Cybercriminals also have been able to create malicious websites that can be accessed through a text message as well.
Tips:
- Always login to your accounts through a trusted web browser and never from a link through an email or text message.
- Make sure to remember to think before your tap. Look out for misspellings, urgent wording, and time of day the message was sent as red flags.
- Remember if you signed up for notifications from certain companies or not. If you haven’t and they are sending a message it is probably a scam.
