Popular News Scams

Be cautious of popular news stories or topics on social media posts and emails because many are scams created by cybercriminals.

Cybercriminals love to use popular news topics in their scams! When Pope Francis passed away, they used AI to create fake videos, images and postings about the event. The cybercriminals use titles and captions on these posts that lure people into clicking on fake websites that are infected with malware.

What you need to know:

  • Cybercriminals will create fake news articles based on popular topics like people passing away and use links to websites that install malware to your devices, send you to websites that prompt you to buy gift cards/provide money to a go fund me and then steal your payment information.
  • Cybercriminals disguise these websites on search results, social media posts and messages.

 TIPS:

  • Never click on unknown websites from social media or random links.
  • Visit trusted websites and use trusted browsers to see news.
  • Don’t get tricked by creative captions or titles on posts.
  • Always make sure your computer and security features are up to date.
