Device Code Scams
Fake verification codes have been created and circulated by cybercriminals to steal people's login information.
Have you ever signed into a streaming service on a device and received a code of random letters/numbers to do so? This is an easy way for people to sign into a streaming app on a tv by using their phone. Cybercriminals have caught on that this is used by many people and have created a scam using a numeric code.
What you need to know:
- Cybercriminals are sending out numerical codes in text messages and emails that include a link to a website.
- Cybercriminals have tried to login into your account and prompted a code to be sent to you. If you sign in with your credentials you give the cybercriminal access to your account which allows them to steal your personal and financial information.
TIPS:
- When you can use MFA (multi-factor authentication) , always enable it! This allows you to have an extra layer of security by making you login an additional time and way.
- If you did not request a device code do not log into it! If you are worried about your account login with a trusted browser, not the link sent to you, go and change your password.
- Make sure to report suspicious messages.
