Threads is a new social media platform that has become very popular. Like any popular subject cybercriminals use trending subjects to be featured in their scams. Threads is very similar to Twitter and many people think it will replace Twitter.
Cybercriminals have purchased domains related to the Threads app to try and trick people into going to the malicious sites and downloading fake apps. They are tricking people by sending emails, sharing websites and promoting ads for a new version of the app that is really a fake version. When a person downloads a fake version they could be downloading malware on their device.
- Always think before you click. Hover over links, look for spelling mistakes, the time emails are sent and the sender’s address.
- Make sure to download apps only from trusted app stores.
- Always do software updates since most will include security updates.
