Someone is Taking Over Your Account Scam!

Cybercriminals crafted a scam to try to trick people into thinking their account has been compromised and then convince them to pay to fix the situation.

Cybercriminals have been impersonating well-known companies like Amazon and claiming that someone has taken over your account. They even go so far into the scare tactic that they state the government is looking into this because there is illegal activity on your account.

What you need to know:

  • This scam is a phone call claiming to be a big retailer. They explain that they will transfer you to the government agent on your case (this is really a cybercriminal).
  • This fake government agent informs the victim that their bank account, computer and cell phone have all been compromised, and money has been stolen. They scare you with this information and then follow up with that they can help solve this problem for you.
  • This agent asks you to withdraw money so they can help you and they tell you to keep it a secret. (Big red flag!)

TIPS:

  • Never give personal and financial information from an unexpected caller.
  • Remember that cybercriminals like to use wording to try to scare you into giving out your personal information.
  • Always be cautious if someone tells you to keep a money withdrawal, phone call or situation a secret.
  • Real government agents or customer service lines will never ask you to withdraw money.
