Smishing Scam
Cybercriminals love to trick people into feeling panicked by urgent messaging. They have crafted a new smishing scam. Cybercriminals have a text message circulating claiming you have an unpaid invoice, toll or fee. These texts include branding that looks like it is coming from a company that looks legit but they really are a scam. All the texts include a link that cybercriminals want you to click on to supposably pay this unpaid fee.
When the person clicks on the link it takes them to a fake webpage and asks them to fill out their personal data and financial information. All the information entered can then be stolen by the cybercriminals.
TIPS:
- Always be cautious of unexpected text messages.
- Log into an account on a trusted website to see if you really have an unpaid fee or invoice on there instead of using the link provided in the text message.
- Remember cybercriminals use wording to encourage urgency so if you see a text with that type of wording, it probably is a scam.
