Tollway Smishing Scam
Getting texts about a toll payment being due? That’s because it’s the latest smishing scam created by cybercriminals! The scam sends a fake text telling you that you have to pay a small toll from when you drove on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Cybercriminals use the tactic of trying to scare you into paying by saying if you don’t pay immediately then you will have to pay late fees.
Cybercriminals have also included a link in the text message that goes to a fake payment webpage. If you add in your payment information and login credentials, then that goes straight to the cybercriminals. Some variations of this scam also could install malware on your device if you click on the link.
TIPS:
- Always be cautious of unexpected text messages, especially when it is using urgent wording and includes links.
- Make sure to ask yourself if you even have driven on this tollway.
- If you aren't sure if a text is real or not about a payment go to the site through a trusted browser or use your app to verify.
