Random Package and QR Code Scam

Cybercriminals are sending you a gift package with only a QR code in hopes you scan it and download malware.

Cybercriminals are aware of how popular QR codes have gotten. After Covid, many restaurants and bars switched to menus being fully accessed by a QR code. In one of their latest scams, they have a random package with no sender or address delivered to your house and it only has a QR code on it.

What you Need to Know:

  • The package has something completely random in it.
  • Cybercriminals are hoping that you are confused and will wonder where it is from. They are hoping you scan the QR code that goes to a fake website they have created.
  • This website will ask for personal information and download malware to your phone.

TIPS:

  • Never scan random QR codes! Anyone can create a QR code now and not all of them are safe.
  • Be cautious of a random package delivered to your house. Especially if it doesn’t have a sender.
