Fake Text Message Scam

Have you ever received a text from an unknown number just saying “Hello”? This might seem like an innocent text and you may be curious who it’s from and decide to reply but it’s really a cybercriminals’ latest scam!

Cybercriminals’ goal with this smishing attack is to get you to reply back. They want to make sure this is a legit phone number. If you reply back they will keep sending you messages to gain your trust and are hoping to trick you into sending over personal data or financial information.

TIPS:

• Always be cautious of unexpected text messages. Even those that seem to be an innocent person texting the wrong number!
• It’s okay not to answer a random and unexpected text message.
• If you do end up replying back to a text like this, make sure to never give your personal data or financial information.
