Spear Phishing Scam

Spear Phishing Scams are just one of the various types of scams that cybercriminals use to trick people into sending over personal sensitive information. Cybercriminals try to gain access to login information, payment information and other personal information so that they can impersonate you, steal your identity and take your money. Spear Phishing is when cybercriminals impersonate a person you know and trust. They also can impersonate companies, which is what they have been doing in the latest scam.

Cybercriminals have been sending out emails pretending to be a trusted media outlet. In this email they are asking to interview you and include a link claiming to send you to a list of questions. If you click the link it takes you to a fake website and prompts you to login. If you login, you are handing over your credentials to cybercriminals.

Tips:

  • Always be cautious of unexpected emails, especially ones that have links or open attachments. Look for red flags and never click on links or open attachments without verifying with the person that sent them. To verify with the person make sure to contact the person directly by phone or in person. Do not verify through the email or the phone number listed in the email.
  • Remember that cybercriminals can use many different scams to try to trick you like spear phishing. Keep in mind that cybercriminals can be impersonating anyone or any company.
